If you’ve registered for baby items recently, you’ve probably noticed that the options are seemingly endless. You can find registry checklists pretty much anywhere- but what do you really need? And what will you actually continue to use once baby becomes toddler? Make sure these three items are at the top of your “must have” list.

Waterproof Mattress Cover

With the various bed related items you have to buy, it can be easy to forget the most important one of all- the mattress cover. It’s not if but when your little one wets through their diaper all the way to the mattress, and you will want to be prepared considering that mattress was not cheap! It’s best to keep at least two, if not three, covers (and extra sheets!) on hand so that you’ll be able to keep your cool even with an accident in the middle of the night… or twice in one day!

Wall Book Shelves

It’s a given that every nursery should be stocked with special bedtime stories, and there are so many creative ways to store and display them. A traditional bookshelf might seem sweet now, but once junior starts crawling he will be finding lots of ways to get into trouble! By placing books on a wall bookshelf, you keep paperback books out of little hands that love to rip the pages. Also, you don’t have to worry about your little one climbing or pulling it down (as long as you hang them high enough). Another plus is that it makes the room more spacious and creates even more space for baby to explore and move around! Some great wall book shelves can be found here and here.

Sound Machine
One of the basics in helping your newborn sleep is playing white noise. It recreates the feeling of being in the womb and triggers the calming reflex. As baby grows, white noise continues to be beneficial as it signals that it’s time for sleep and drowns out loud outside noises. Dr. Harvey Karp, author of Happiest Baby on the Block, suggests that the white noise resemble that of a soft shower. There are a plethora of apps you can download to your phone or tablet, as well as physical sound machines available for purchase online and in stores. You can also choose to go the old fashion route and just use a noisy desk fan.

It can be overwhelming deciding which items to bring into your home for baby. Find comfort in knowing that eventually you will find what works for you. You’ll be suggesting your favorites to new, expectant parents in no time!
