This can be an area of concern or curiosity once you find out your expecting a baby! It quickly becomes second nature to start paying close attention to the food you eat. After all, your concern is not just for you now- but to ensure that what you consume is safe for your baby’s development. Proper nutrition is vitally important, so what foods are safe to eat while pregnant?
Fruits and vegetables are a great option and very beneficial during pregnancy (and anytime). They are rich in fiber and vitamins for your body. Of course, you want to be sure that they are properly washed.
In particular, wash lettuce especially well, to be cautious of any possible traces of E.coli or salmonella. Nutrient packed options to name a few are things like avocados, berries, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, carrots, and apples.
If you love meats, there are plenty of safe options to choose from while pregnant. Meats that are thoroughly cooked, such as chicken, beef, and pork are deemed as safe to consume. Also, dried and salted meats like pepperoni and salami from the deli.
If you choose to have other types of deli meat the recommendation is to heat it until it’s steaming hot. This will help avoid and kill any type of harmful bacteria that could be present in the deli meat.

Grains such as oatmeal and whole grain rice are healthy and safe to eat during pregnancy. Legumes such as lentils, which are rich in nutrients and proteins are also safe — other varieties of beans like chickpeas, and black beans are also a great option.
Whole grain cereals, pastas, and breads are safe to consume and typically fortified with folic acid-great benefit to your growing baby! Proteins such as yogurt (you can even add granola!) is a great source of calcium as well.
Also, any variety of nuts, which are packed full of minerals are other safe choices. Eggs, are also a great source of protein and choline, which is very beneficial and needed for your baby’s development.
And…..we cannot forget about the importance of drinking water!! Drinking plenty of water while your pregnant is crucial. You can infuse it with berries, cucumbers, lemons, limes…the options are endless for you to be creative!
