Each Christmas season, we purchase some new children’s Christmas books that we read as a family. To date, we have approximately 35 books (some seasons we bought more than one). And to be honest, I’m not sure who enjoys reading the books more—our children, or my husband and me.
There are plenty of children’s Christmas books on the market, but we chose books based on our family understanding of the meaning for the season, books we enjoyed when we were children, books that shared some of our heritage, or books based on animated characters our children were into for that year. Here are several children’s Christmas books we especially enjoyed.
In between reading, make sure to take some time to make some of these cute & easy Christmas cookies.
Cynthia Ryland is one of my personal all-time favorite children’s authors. One of the big reasons I’m drawn to her is because she writes about people and situations in rural Appalachia, a heritage we share. But you don’t have to be from the mountains to fall in love with the illustrations, the simple, heart-felt stories, and the real people she writes about.

We loved the antics of this fluffy canine when my kids were young. They got to where they read this one to us!
This is a terrific touch-and-feel book with simple, lyrical text: “I am the star that shines in the night / I light the way with my holy light.” It’s great for little ones, and it remains a personal favorite. Someone recommended purchasing the Fisher Price Nativity Scene to go along with this book. Great idea!
